New World War II Memorial

A new World War two memorial makes a big move forward as Forsyth County leaders approve a tri-party contract between themselves, the artist, and the Development Authority.

County Attorney Ken Jarrard stated the expected cost of the project and said, "The cost of this project is going to be $146,000 of which the Development Authority is going to make a contribution back to the county for $20,000. So, our net is going to be $126,000."

Local artist Gregory Johnson will create the piece that will sit outside the front of the new courthouse. He's the artist who created a few other pieces around the downtown square.

On Veterans Day of 2019, County leaders plan to hold a special ceremony to reveal a new World War II memorial currently in the works.

Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills said the county and others are excited about honoring those veterans. "Next year is the 75th anniversary of D-Day," Mills said. "So, it's uh, we've had some organizations already talking about they'd like to be a part of it."

Voters approved the funding for the project during the SPLOST 8 vote.
