On February 5, 2008, not only will voters be casting their lot for the presidential candidates, but also for two Forsyth county initiatives. SPLOST VI and the Parks, Recreation and Greenspace Initiative will also be on the ballot.
SPLOST VI is a one-cent sales tax, a portion of the 7% sales tax in Forsyth County. The tax rate will not increase since the current sales tax includes the SPLOST V one-cent sales tax, which is due to expire this summer . The bulk of the anticipated revenue will be used for Roads, Streets, Bridges and Sidewalks, but plans also include building 5 new fire stations and a library, in addition to other cultural and public safety endeavors. More information on SPLOST VI can be found at www.splostvi.com.
The Parks, Recreation and Greenspace Bond will allow for the purchase of greenspace and recreation areas within Forsyth County. The Bond language on the ballot will read as follows:
"Shall there be issued up to $100,000,000 in aggregate principal amount of Forsyth County General Obligation Bonds for the purpose of financing parks and recreational areas, programs and facilities, including, but not limited to, green spaces and conservation areas for the protection of lakes, rivers, forest and wildlife habitats?'
