Universally Accessible Tree House Slated for Sawnee Mountain Preserve Print E-mail
Tuesday, 07 February 2006
The 2006 class of Leadership Forsyth has announced their class project as the first of its kind Universally Accessible Tree House in the Southeast and the state of Georgia.  The Tree House is the brain child of Matthew Pate of the Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Department, who manages the Sawnee Mountain Preserve and is a member of this year’s Leadership class.  Pate’s idea was inspired by the founder of Forever Young Treehouses, a Vermont non-profit organization that seeks to locate a universally accessible tree house in every state by 2008.  The Leadership project would be added to their count.

The tree house will be accessible by wheelchair and will feature two structures connected by ramps.  One structure will feature three rooms, each providing a different view of the surrounding  environment, the second will be a pavilion style classroom which will used by classes from the Forsyth County School System for environmental training.

According to Pate, For the first time physically challenged and disabled children will be able to experience the magic of nature in a way they never imagined, allowing them to learn and grow in an environment that is both captivating and educational.

Leadership class members will need to raise nearly $50,000 to cover the costs of building the tree house and classroom.  Corporate and individual sponsors have an opportunity to donate to the project with recognition being displayed through a permanent donor plate that will be displayed on the tree house site.  Several local business owners have pledged to donate the materials and some of the services necessary to construct the tree house.  Leadership class members will donate both their time and talents to assist in the construction of the project.

Groundbreaking for the project is to occur in late March to early April with completion of the Tree House in early May.  The Leadership Forsyth group expects to plan a dedication ceremony in mid-May.
