The county commissioners extended a residential rezoning moratorium for another 3 months in their continuing effort to review the county infrastructure and reanalyze the development plan for the county. The issue was determined by a vote of 3-2 split along quality growth vs. pro-development lines.
Water planning is one of the reasons for the moratorium. The county is in a severe water drought a growing trend with global climate change. The water table in the county is dropping and the lakes are down many feet. The residents can not use water for anything other than basic needs. The entire metro Atlanta area and most of Georgia is suffering from the drought The county has 25,000 residential houses approved for constrruction and the moratorium has virtually no effect on the housing industry. The olny people it is affecting is speculative developers who were planning on making millions and are now in limbo. That group has put together an organization called "the Council for Quality Growth" that by name is an organization promoting quality growth. They appeared before the commission along with a homebuilders association speaking to get the moratorium cancelled. The quality growth organization that is mostly compromised of residents, "Smart Growth", supports the moratorium. |
