Fall Back! Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries |
|
Daylight savings time ends this Sunday, October 29th. The official time change occurs at 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning when the time is moved back one hour. It’s a good idea to change your clocks when you go to bed on Saturday night.
The Fire Department also suggests that you replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors at this time. "Taking the time to replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors while changing the clocks in your home is a basic step that could very well be a life-saving step," said Fire Chief Danny Bowman. "Changing the batteries when daylight-saving time ends is an easy way to help keep you and your family safe."
The Forsyth County Fire Department recommends testing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors at least once a month and replacing the batteries every six months. The units themselves should be replaced every eight to ten years.
The Fire Department also reminds citizens to: • Be sure to have a smoke detector on every level of your home • Place a smoke detector outside each sleeping area of the home • Make sure smoke detectors are clean and free of dust • Never "borrow" a smoke detector's battery for another use • Teach children that a smoke alarm warns them if a fire starts • Always dial 911 in case of any emergency
The Forsyth County Fire Department is eager to help those who may need smoke detectors in their residence. The Fire Department’s Public Safety Education division provides smoke detectors free of charge for senior citizens and needy residents; they will also install those detectors.
