City of Cumming to dredge Lake Lanier |
|
While the area received over an inch of rain this week, Forsyth County's drought seems never ending. The city of Cumming is now planning to dredge a portion of Lake Lanier to ensure that residents and businesses in Forsyth County will receive the water they need. The dredging will build a channel into deeper areas of the lake and allow the newly extended water withdrawal pipe to be lowered to 1,030 feet. The process will require several thousand cubic yards of silt and soil to be removed from the lake bottom and taken to shore. The silt and soil will then be drained and dried before being taken to a local farm. The dredging process will take two to four weeks and will cost the city about $1million. At 1,052.18 feet, Lake Lanier is now below it's lowest level since the lake was filled almost 50 years ago.
